About Us

Our Approach 

At the Writing Centre, we know that writing is a process and a practice, not a perfectible skill. We emphasize that all communication, irrespective of medium, happens in dialogue with others. And we foreground the fact that writing is done in social contexts for specific purposes. 

Student writing is a scholarly activity. It is constrained by disciplinary norms and generic conventions. Our goal is to help student writers understand, navigate, and innovative upon those constraints. Across our supports, our approach is inquiry-based, non-prescriptive, and dialogic. Helping students to improve their written assignments is a priority, but our broader mission is to help them improve their scholarly literacy and become engaged, self-reflexive communicators. To this end, we are committed to fostering conversations about writing, communities of writers, and a culture of scholarship on campus.

Our supports are aligned with evidence-based pedagogies from writing studies and writing centre scholarship, especially the subfields of genre theory, writing in the disciplines, and English for academic purposes. Likewise, we are guided by best practices as advocated by the Canadian Writing Centre Association.
